Basic Life Support in Obstetrics (BLSO) is designed to improve the management of normal deliveries, as well as obstetric emergencies by standardizing the skills of first responders, emergency personnel and maternity care providers.
The BLSO curriculum is designed to train:
•Pre-hospital care providers
•First responders and emergency personnel
•Medical, nursing, and physician assistant students

ALSO® PROVIDER COURSE
Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) is an evidence-based, interprofessional, and multidisciplinary training program that equips the entire maternity care team with skills to effectively manage obstetric emergencies. This comprehensive course encourages a standardized team-based approach amongst physicians, residents, nurse midwives, registered nurses and other members of the maternity care team to improve patient safety and positively impact maternal outcomes.
OVERALL COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. Discuss methods of managing pregnancy and birth urgencies and emergencies, which standardizes the skills of practicing maternity care providers.
2. Demonstrate content and skill acquisition as evidenced by successful completion of online course examination, skills workstations, and group testing stations.
3. Provide safe team leadership through various emergency obstetric scenarios.

STABLE 7th Edition -- June 17, 2026 -- Maine Medical Center
The Learner participant must
Complete the S.T.A.B.L.E. Foundations Module, available through our online partner, HealthStream, prior to attending the learner course. If a student has not completed Foundations by the start of the course, the instructor must ask them to reschedule their Learner course attendance. *Please note it may take up to 48 hours for Foundations completions to update to our system. Please complete your Foundations module a few days before you are scheduled to attend the in-person Learner course.
In reference to the online prework through HealthStream. Please check with your supervisor, to see if STABLE licenses have been purchased for your institution. If so, your supervisor will direct you to their institution’s learning platform. If STABLE is a requirement for your position, cost should be covered by your institution. If licenses have not been purchased or it is not a requirement of your position, there is a $54.00 charge for the online prework. The live portion of the class is free.
You will also be a sent a pretest to complete from Kathleen Taylor prior to attending the class.
Topics to Include:
Discuss issues of patient safety and error reduction in the delivery
of nursing and medical infant care.
Identify infants at increased risk for becoming hypothermic.
Summarize basic evaluation of neonatal respiratory distress.
Discuss the causes, presentation and initial treatment of hypovolemic, cardiogenic, and septic shock.
Describe the clinical signs of neonatal sepsis.
Discuss the crisis that families face when the infant requires care in a neonatal intensive care unit.
You may find it helpful to have a STABLE Program Learner Manual with you during this class.
